Plasma ⚡ - The Fourth State of Matter

What is Plasma?

Plasma is an ionized gas made of free electrons and positive ions. When a gas receives very high energy, its atoms lose electrons and become charged.

Who Discovered Plasma?

In 1879, Sir William Crookes observed plasma while experimenting with cathode ray tubes. Later, the term "plasma" was given by Irving Langmuir in 1928.

Sir William Crookes studied electrical discharges in gases. Irving Langmuir named the ionized gas "plasma" because it reminded him of blood plasma carrying particles.
